Fast-growing Saudi distributor Sariya Company used this week's Saudi Gitex to promote its EqualLogic internet protocol (IP) storage technology in the region.

The EqualLogic name refers both to an enterprise class solution and the firm behind it - it is the latter that last year became the second largest IP networking vendor worldwide, according to research house IDC.

"We have launched the product in the region already and quickly signed a couple of big deals," explained James Mathew, Sariya's general manager. "The German University in Qatar for example has brought on board EqualLogic in the form of a 64Tbyte IP storage solution."

Mathew claimed the EqualLogic solution's popularity was down to the fact that it is both cost-effective to implement and highly scalable thereafter.

"A customer can start from just 1.5Tbyte and this is then scalable up to 116Tbyte and all the management software covers the same single box solution," Mathew said.

"The strategy with competitors such as EMC and Network Appliance is that they divide their products into three categories and the customer chooses the solution that fits their budget and requirements at the time. Say they purchase at the entry-level then the scalability is limited, meaning an upgrade is required when your business grows in the future - a painful and expensive process, which sometimes means a lot of failures," he added.
