Abu Dhabi's MECOM telecoms and networking exhibition is gearing up for its inaugural show this month, and is aiming to establish itself as the premier comms-related event in the Middle East.

Speakers lined up for the event include Mohamed Al-Ghanim, director-general of the UAE Telecoms Regulatory Authority (TRA); Osman Sultan, CEO of du; Mohammed Al Qamzi CEO of Etisalat; Bo-Erik Dahlström, president and head of Ericsson Middle East; Noel Kirkaldy, director of wireless broadband MEA at Motorola Networks & Enterprise; and Alan Horne, general director of the Bahraini TRA.

"The telecommunications sector in the region is witnessing an exciting time, with telecom monopolies making way for more liberalised market structures and customers pressing for a greater range of services," said Patrick Latchem, managing director of the MECOM Summit. "In addition, there is global pressure on telecommunication infrastructure towards seamless conversion, creating a new dynamic with a host of new opportunities and equally plentiful challenges.

"The continual process of change in regional telecommunications necessitated a targeted event serving as the de facto industry forum, and we are confident that the MECOM exhibition, with its associated Telecommunications and ICT summit will address the need by becoming a representative event for the telecom sector," added Latchem.

This latest event is targeting the same market as GITEX-spinoff GulfComms, which ran for the first time alongside the giant Dubai tech expo last year.

The Middle East telecoms market has seen a boom in recent years, fuelled by strong economic growth and market liberalisation leading to increasing competition.
