Sun Microsystems is replacing the head of its storage division after less than a year in charge.

David Yen will return to the microprocessor side of Sun's business and be replaced by Jon Benson, formerly Sun's vice president of tape engineering.

Sun is also reportedly moving other staff out of its storage division and into its server unit, but has declined to specify how many employees will be affected.

This latest move, especially Benson's background in tape engineering, has reignited rumours Sun is planning to sell off its disk storage business to rival Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) - something Sun has persistently denied.

Sun said last week that while Yen had done a good job it was "quite a good time for a change".

"The [storage product] roadmaps needed a change, and now they are much more sensible," Nigel Dessau, Sun's storage marketing vice president, was reported as saying.
