Qatar Telecom (Qtel) has signed a managed services deal with Siemens that will see the vendor operate the telco's UMTS mobile network.

Under the agreement, Siemens will be responsible for monitoring, maintaining and optimising the operator's network.

Announcing the deal last week, Qtel said choosing the right partner for its UMTS network was particularly important due to the high customer demand for services such as mobile internet connectivity and video messaging.

"With Siemens as managed services partner we meet the challenges facing our network," said Abdul Aziz Fakhroo, senior manager of wireless networks at Qtel.

The contract between Siemens and Qtel extends a service partnership that has been running since June last year.

Siemens said the network would be monitored via a network operations centre, from where the firm's staff could eliminate software disruptions remotely or alert maintenance teams who would then carry out necessary repairs on site.

"With our services we improve the availability of the network and ensure optimum quality in the UMTS sector right from day one," said Daniel-Rui Felicio, head of carrier services at Siemens Networks.
