Algeria's Ministry of Transport has selected Huawei for the deployment of a wireless communications platform for the country's Tabia-Mecheria railway line.

The vendor announced last week it has been contracted to implement a GSM-R solution - a platform developed specifically for railway communication and applications - for Algeria Société Nationale des Transports Ferroviaires (SNTF), including network design and engineering services.

The Tabia-Mecheria line is an important main passenger transport stem in Algeria with 220 kilometres of rail tracks.

After construction is completed, the Tabia-Mecheria line will be the first modern railway in Algeria to be equipped with GSM-R technologies.

"Huawei has invested continuously for ten years in GSM-R technology, and we are delighted to construct the GSM-R system for SNTF. Huawei will make a positive contribution to the rail communications industry in Algeria through the supply of abundant rail communication services," said Tian Feng, president of Huawei MENA.

Huawei said its GSM-R solution met ETCS level two requirements and possessed the capability to support ETCS level three - both digital radio-based signal and train protection systems.
