Trend Micro is looking at a brighter forecast for security, by launching "in-the-cloud" web reputation technology that allows users to gauge how safe a web site is.

The security giant said that by allowing users to evaluate a web site's credibility before entering, it was adding an additional layer of security - in-the-cloud - to existing defences at gateway, network and PC level.

"When an employee of a business uses the web, whether for company research, to surf or to socialise, they are automatically increasing the security risk to their organisation and corporate managers need tools to better understand and make decisions about their risk," said Eva Chen, Trend Micro CEO. "The ability to track the credibility and reputation of a site before entering it is like running a credit check prior to entering a business agreement."

Trend Micro said the web reputation technology was being built into its portfolio of security products. It combines web reputation, URL filtering, anti-virus, anti-spyware and anti-spam technology.
