Cisco's acquisition of WebEx is unlikely to be its last in the unified communications space, a senior analyst has said.

In an interview with IT Weekly, Gartner Research vice president Neil Rickard said he expected the networking giant to make additional purchases in this sector.

"I think the unified comms and collaboration space is far from done and I think there'll be a lot more activity in that space in the very broadest definition of conferencing and collaboration," he said.

Rickard added that other areas the networking vendor was likely to look at for future acquisitions included management and server virtualisation.

Cisco agreed to buy web conferencing solution provider WebEx for US$3.2 billion. It was Cisco's fifth buy this year following the purchases of XML gateway supplier Reactivity and message security firm IronPort.
