Acer unveils its first HD-DVD notebook

The Middle East's leading notebook vendor, Acer, is to launch the Aspire 9510 notebook in the region, its first to come with a built-in high definition DVD. In addition to HD-DVD, the notebook also comes with the latest multimedia features including TV-on-notebook, excellent graphics capabilities, high definition audio, DVI-D and HDMI ports and the Acer Video Conference solution with integrated Orbicam 1.3 megapixel camera on top of the LCD panel.

Its 17-inch CystalBrite display does not affect its portability - weighing in at 3.98kg it is compact and light enough to be carried around. The notebook is powered by an eight cells Li-ion battery that can provide up to three hours of battery life.

Acer is looking at the small or home office end user as the primary market for the first HD-DVD notebook.

Revised pricing for latest release of Oracle Warehouse Builder

Oracle Warehouse Builder 10g Release 2 is now available. The latest version of the database design and Extraction, Transformation and Load (ETL) tool introduces new data quality, integration and administrative features, among others, for customers seeking an easy-to-use tool for rapidly designing, deploying, and managing data integration projects and business intelligence (BI) systems.

Oracle also introduced new pricing and packaging for the new release. The core database design and ETL capabilities are now included with Oracle Database 10g Release 2 Enterprise Edition, Standard Edition, and Standard Edition One at no extra cost. Other new options and connectors provide customers with increased capabilities to help meet a wide range of ETL and data quality needs.

To address the need for high data quality in organisations seeking to optimise business performance and ensure better decision-making, Release 2 offers enhanced features including name and address cleansing, and de-duplication functionality.

To ensure information can be drilled, manipulated, mined, and pivoted within BI applications and decision support tools, the solution also includes the ability to design relational and OLAP database structures, making it easy to store data in a common Oracle Database repository and offer users a choice of BI tools such as Oracle Business Intelligence Suite, spreadsheets, and many others.

New HP OpenView helps to align IT

The new HP OpenView management solutions tightly align IT priorities with business requirements to enable IT departments to deliver greater value while optimising performance, reducing risk and increasing agility.

The software includes HP OpenView DecisionCenter, an IT decision support tool that uses analysis and "what if" simulations against historical service data, allowing CIOs to optimise
IT staff assignments based on both service-level impact and cost.

Another component is HP OpenView AssetCenter, based on technology gained through HP's acquisition of Peregrine Systems. This offers full lifecycle asset management - a first for HP. The solution aligns business services to the required assets, providing a framework for end users to understand the financial impact of their consumption of IT and controls for managing consumption to the budget.

HP OpenView Application Insight lets IT move beyond component-based approaches to manage complex app environments from a business perspective. Using discovery-assisted modelling, it groups applications and the underlying infrastructure into a tailored hierarchical model of customers and business services.

Enhanced virtualisation for HP Integrity

New capabilities on the Virtual Server Environment (VSE) for HP Integrity servers better enable users to adjust resources for pooled servers automatically. The VSE Reference Architecture for Oracle Real Application Clusters for HP-UX 11i dynamically scales the Integrity server when mission-critical Oracle database workloads fluctuate. Customers can use the capability to automatically allocate additional server capacity to financial applications during the month-end close.

For customers concerned about the availability of their mission-critical UX environments when they consolidate using virtualisation, HP has further integrated HP Serviceguard for HP-UX 11i with HP Integrity Virtual Machines. This helps guard against failure by automatically moving the virtual machines between servers in a VSE. HP Integrity virtual machines also enable easy manual migration of virtual machines, accelerating application qualification and deployment.

"No other vendor can offer the level of virtualisation capability for Oracle customers," said Yasser Ragaei, Business Manager, Enterprise Servers, HP Middle East. "HP leads the way in mission-critical server virtualisation with HP-UX 11i, now enabling customers to automatically flex, add and move server resources in support of constantly changing business demands."

Linksys releases first in its wireless-N family

Linksys has three new Wireless-N products - a broadband router, a notebook adapter and a PCI Adapter. These products are the first in a line of Wireless-N products from Linksys built to the 802.11n draft specification.

Wireless-N's MIMO technology increases the range and reduces "dead spots" in the wireless coverage area. The signal can thus travel further, based on a standard aimed to help maintain wireless connections up to four times further than standard Wireless-G.

WRT300N is an Internet-sharing Wireless-N broadband router and 4-port Switch; the WPC300N notebook adapter is an easy way to add or upgrade wireless connectivity in a notebook computer; and the WMP300N PCI adapter installs in most desktop and tower PCs to allow the user to put a computer almost anywhere in the building without the cost or hassle of running network cables. The adapter supports up to 128-bit WEP and PSK encryption security.
